I wrote this when I was 16 - 15 years ago.

The topic is brought up
By someone each day.
Someone dies of AIDS,
So in a coffin they must lay.

When friends find out,
It’s a shock at first.
Their hearts filled with emotions,
They’re ready to burst.

It’s a disease that strikes many,
Everywhere in the land.
To find a cure for AIDS,
We all must lend a hand.

You don’t just get AIDS
From having careless sex,
For there is protection out there
Such as condoms made of latex.

You can get it from sharing
Needles in the arm.
If you share with an infectious person,
It’ll cause you serious harm.

Back in the 80’s people donated blood
Not knowing they had AIDS or HIV.
The people who received that blood
Are now coming forward to you and me.

They’re speaking at lectures
That they didn’t know.
Negligence from doctors
Just goes to show.

These people will now die
Maybe in 6 months or 20 years.
When they voice their advice,
They also voice their fears.

TV shows, such as Soaps
Are making us more aware.
They doing it by putting a storyline
To do with AIDS on the air.

Put on the market
There’s a drug called EZT
To slow down the process
Of AIDS and HIV.

It may slow down the process,
But it’s certainly not a cure.
People that have hopes of this
Are getting fewer and fewer.

But for as long as mankind lives
We must never give up hope.
For the families who have to deal with AIDS
Will never be able to cope.

AIDS is an epidemic--not only here but in other countries as well. Things are better then the 1980s. Very well written poem for 16.

Thank you guys for the comments. When I wrote it, I was in the middle of watching an AIDS storyline on the show General HOspital - they portrayed quite well I felt.

I hope many read this poem. Very important message in it. As the ads say "Aids has no prejudice". Great write. You should be proud of yourself with this.
