Muddy water
Murky bottom
Things there biting at my feet
Waded through
What first was shallow
Tide then drug me way too deep

Saw the shoreline
In my vision
But I couldn't make it there
Fought so hard
But lost the battle
Sunk to where there was no air

Still I struggled
Still I reached for
Dwindling surface above me
Then the murky
Water took me
Light above I could not see

Wearied now
No longer caring
If I lived or if I died
Thinking no one
Was around to
Care enough to hear my cry

Resignation
Took me deeper
Hitting bottom, I gave in
To the pain
I let the tears go
God, oh God, where have you been

Wallowed there
Down on the seabed
Willing myself just to go
Opened my eyes
Then I realized
Should have drowned so long ago

Raised my hand
To part the seaweed
Far above, a sign of hope
Closed my eyes
And let the water
Rise me toward a dangling rope

Almost wishing
For an end to
All the pain that hides inside
But still reaching
For that surface
Praying for help to survive

Then I feel it
Brush against the
Skin of wearied outstretched arm
Grabbing hold now
To the rope and
Someone pulls me safe from harm

Breaking surface
Gasps for air
The sunlight shines upon my face
Blinking salt
From tired and sore eyes
Looking for my saving grace

Then I realize
Hands are empty
There’s no rope here in this sea
But upon
Calm waves and ripples
Vessel floating right to me

Unmanned dingy
Out of place
Confused, I thought just how and why
Could it be
Coincidence
This boat just happened to float by

Last ounce of strength
Pulled myself in and
Sipped rain water from the hull
Then I lay back
Floated with
The sunlight and the calming lull

Strength returning
Started praying
God, this journey was not fair
The answer hit me
Had I looked up
His boat has always been right there

Avoiding convenient humor and excessive smoke blowing,
I search for words to say my piece. There is a person
behind each poem and a truth that seeks release. This
person matters more to me than many and shallow words
to pass the time, I find I haven't any. On the other
hand, you may need to smile and breathe without a pain;
so row your little dingy Vangie and return to shore again.

Glad you made it back, Vangie. Perfect lyric, loved the style, and the "don't keep furiously pushing" message. The boat is always there.

From the murky depths of life's uncertainties one can find themselves drowning in the depths of sorrow.Yet close by waits that rope to pull us out, with promises of a better tomorrow. Easy 10!

I almost died, once almost drowning. It was in Canada, and the water, even in the summer, was very cold. After I tipped over the canoe I must have passed out. When I came to the was about twenty feet between my head and the surface. I made it out, but had a much bigger respect for water afterwards. Thanks for your comment on "They", when my Sister-in-law first read that she asked me to tell her if her claws ever start to form.

Deuteronomy 31:8 And the Lord, he it is that doth go before thee; he will be with thee, he will not fail thee, neither forsake thee: fear not, neither be dismayed.

Most superbly written...
